When someone dies by suicide, the celebrant is often one of the first professionals to step into the family’s home. In that moment, knowing what to say, and what not to say, can feel daunting or even overwhelming.

Josie Jakub, the CEO of Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SoBS) will share practical insight into the realities of suicide bereavement and the profound emotional and physical impact of traumatic grief. Celebrants will learn how to prepare for that first conversation, approach families with confidence and sensitivity.

The session will also explore how to recognise signs that someone in the family may be at risk themselves, and how celebrants can signpost to the right support. Celebrants will leave with greater confidence, understanding and practical tools to support families at one of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Kate is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Bath where she is co-director of the Centre for Death and Society (CDAS). Over two decades she has conducted funded research and published on funeral costs, funeral practice, families at the end of life, cemetery usage, direct cremation, and much more.

This session will examine what is currently happening within funeral practice, including the rise of direct cremation.

Kate said: “Drawing on data from a number of academics studies I have conducted over the last decade I will explore what may become of funerals tomorrow, reflecting on who a funeral is for and why, the impact of the increasing complexity of families, and the potential outcomes of growing scrutiny of funeral provision.”

This session explores the distinctions between multicultural, multifaith, interfaith and fusion weddings, and how to approach each with clarity, respect, and authenticity. We’ll look at common pitfalls, meaningful ways to honour multiple traditions, and how celebrants can confidently guide couples through ceremonies that truly reflect who they are.
